The Nigerian Army has given reasons for the arrest of social media influencer Justice Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, saying he was detained after investigations linked him to conversations with soldiers that were considered subversive.
In a statement on Saturday signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said attention was first drawn to the influencer following online posts showing soldiers complaining about their feeding and welfare conditions.
According to the military, a deeper review of his interactions with the personnel suggested the discussions went beyond concerns about welfare.
Preliminary findings, the Army said, indicated that Chidiebere engaged soldiers in conversations that could encourage dissatisfaction within the ranks.
“The soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere, who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system. An example was a chat bordering on subversion which Chidiebere had with the soldiers,” the statement noted.
The Army stressed that such conduct poses serious risks to discipline and national security, adding that attempts to influence military personnel in that manner cannot be taken lightly.
It confirmed that Chidiebere was arrested alongside the soldiers involved, with the soldiers still in military custody while the influencer has been handed over to civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The statement also linked the development to alleged violations of its social media guidelines and attempts to spread misleading information.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, saying it would continue to work with relevant agencies to ensure proper investigation and justice.
