Senator Francis Fadahunsi has been asked to appear before the Osun State Police Command following remarks attributed to him at an APC campaign event in Ilesa ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The lawmaker representing Osun East Senatorial District is expected to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo at 11 a.m. on Wednesday to provide an explanation regarding the comments.
The police invitation, dated August 11 and signed by Samuel Erale, the Commissioner of Police coordinating the Osun election, said the action was prompted by information that Fadahunsi made remarks viewed as “threatening, inciting and intimidating” during the rally.
A video from the event subsequently went viral, with Fadahunsi heard using the word “kill” while speaking about members of the Accord Party.
The senator has rejected claims that he was urging APC supporters to physically attack Accord members. He later explained that he was speaking metaphorically and meant that the party should be defeated at the ballot box.
Osun Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the invitation during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, saying the command wants Fadahunsi to explain the context of his statement.
“He has been invited, and when he comes, whatever he says will be made available to the public,” Ojelabi said.
Addressing concerns about whether the senator’s status could shield him from questioning, the police spokesperson said Fadahunsi does not have immunity that prevents such an invitation.
“He is a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are not talking about immunity here. Even people not up to his status, we normally write invitation letters to them,” he added.
