Reno Omokri has dismissed reports alleging that Mexico rejected him as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate, insisting that the delay in his deployment is linked to the country’s ongoing World Cup commitments.

The former presidential aide made the clarification while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, where he described the rumours as baseless and politically motivated.

According to Omokri, Mexico’s attention is currently focused on co-hosting the FIFA World Cup with the United States, which has slowed down the process of receiving foreign diplomats.

“Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all. You should understand that Mexico is currently hosting the World Cup alongside the United States of America, and all their focus is on that,” he said.

He added that the delay is not unique to him, noting that several Nigerian ambassador-designates are yet to resume duties in their respective countries of posting.

“Most of us ambassadors have not resumed. So, I’m not the only one. A lot of my colleagues are in my situation, but it’s okay. These things happen,” Omokri stated.

The ambassador-designate maintained that claims of his rejection are merely narratives being pushed by political opponents.

“The opposition will always say things like I have been rejected. We do not work on the basis of the opposition. We work on the basis of reality,” he said.

Omokri further expressed confidence in Nigeria’s diplomatic standing, saying countries that enjoy cordial relations with Nigeria would eventually receive its accredited envoys.

He also spoke on the 2027 presidential election, rejecting claims that opposition politicians are in a stronger position to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
