South Africa secured their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage after edging South Korea 1-0 in a tense final Group A encounter.

The victory lifted Bafana Bafana into second place in the standings and guaranteed progression to the Round of 32.

South Korea dominated possession for much of the first half but struggled to break down a disciplined South African defence. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was rarely troubled as South Africa remained compact and looked to strike on the counter.

The decisive moment arrived in the 65th minute when substitute Tshepang Moremi made an immediate impact, racing down the left flank before delivering a low cross into the box. Thapelo Maseko controlled the pass, turned his marker and fired home to hand South Africa the lead.

South Korea pushed forward in search of an equaliser, introducing attacking reinforcements including Cho Gue-sung. However, South Africa stood firm, with Williams producing a commanding display and dealing confidently with a series of dangerous deliveries.

Late efforts from Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in failed to produce a breakthrough, while Williams comfortably gathered a final stoppage-time header to preserve the lead.

The result sealed a famous victory for South Africa and confirmed their place in the knockout stage, while South Korea bowed out of the tournament.
