The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, was on Monday reportedly attacked by suspected thugs during a violent incident at the council secretariat.
Omolayo, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, had earlier been suspended by councillors over allegations of gross misconduct. The suspension reportedly followed internal disagreements between him and members of the legislative arm of the council.
After spending about six months away from office, the embattled chairman resumed duties on Monday, but his return quickly turned chaotic.
Eyewitnesses said suspected thugs stormed the council secretariat shortly after his arrival, allegedly attempting to prevent him from entering the premises. The situation escalated into a confrontation that degenerated into violence.
According to one witness, the attackers beat him severely, tore his clothes, and left him nearly naked, while panic spread across the secretariat as workers and visitors ran for safety. Gunshots were also reportedly fired into the air during the commotion.
Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that security operatives were swiftly deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further escalation.
