The University of Ibadan has named Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as its 14th Vice-Chancellor after emerging as the successful candidate in a highly competitive selection process.
The appointment was announced by the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adebisi Akande, after the Council approved the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.
Prof. Olapegba, who currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and is a professor in the Department of Psychology, was selected from a pool of eight candidates.
Akande explained that the recruitment process began ahead of the expiration of the current Vice-Chancellor’s tenure on November 1, 2026, in line with the provisions of the University Act.
He said six applications were received after vacancies were advertised in three national newspapers in April. A search committee later identified two more qualified candidates, increasing the number of applicants to eight.
The Governing Council met with all eight candidates on July 21, where members assessed and scored each applicant independently using approved guidelines. The exercise produced five finalists who advanced to the last stage of the selection.
The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the shortlisted candidates before recommending Prof. Olapegba for the position.
Akande described the entire exercise as transparent, rigorous and competitive, adding that the Governing Council unanimously endorsed the board’s recommendation.
