Sen. Iyabo Obasanjo, a former Ogun State governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticised the party’s consensus arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections, urging a more inclusive and transparent process for selecting candidates.

Following the Ogun APC caucus meeting held on April 13, 2026, where Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola was announced as the consensus candidate, Obasanjo, who had earlier agreed to abide by the party’s decision, raised concerns over how the process was conducted.

Although she congratulated Adeola and formally stepped down in line with her earlier commitment, she alleged irregularities during the meeting, including the denial of access to some of her supporters. She also claimed that two of her supporters were assaulted by a party official and required medical attention, describing the situation as inconsistent with the party’s principles.

She further noted that despite her extensive consultations and grassroots mobilisation across Ogun State, she and other aspirants were not acknowledged during the meeting, unlike individuals from a particular zone. She also pointed to what she described as a lack of recognition for the efforts of her campaign group, including the Iyaniwura Foundation, which supported her ambition.

Despite her grievances, Obasanjo reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and expressed continued support for President Bola Tinubu, stressing that she remains committed to the party’s success in Ogun State.

She called on the party leadership to adopt a more inclusive and fair approach, arguing that genuine unity can only be achieved through mutual respect, recognition, and collective participation of all stakeholders.
