Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called for the resignation of President Bola Tinubu, citing worsening economic conditions and insecurity in the country.
Obi made the call on Monday while reacting to the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, describing it as an example of accountability in public office.
He said the British leader stepped down following public dissatisfaction over economic stagnation, rising cost of living, and unmet promises, adding that such standards should also apply in Nigeria.
Obi recalled that prior to the 2015 general elections, President Tinubu had criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to resign over insecurity and economic challenges, including the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.
He also referenced Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promises, including commitments to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, and enhance citizens’ welfare, noting that the President had reportedly said he should step down if he failed to deliver.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s situation has worsened under the current administration, with persistent insecurity, kidnappings, economic hardship, and poor power supply affecting citizens across the country.
He further alleged setbacks in key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts, saying Nigerians are facing severe socio-economic pressure.
“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” he said.
Obi added that accountability in leadership is essential for strengthening democracy and ensuring better governance and a better future for citizens.
