The Presidency has threatened legal action against social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), following the circulation of an alleged AI-generated audio recording said to feature President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The audio, which has spread widely online, contains a series of controversial and unverified remarks attributed to the President. In the recording, the voice appears to discuss the 2023 election, claims about political opposition, insecurity in the country, borrowing from international lenders, and alleged conversations involving opposition figures. The content has triggered widespread debate, with many users questioning whether it was fabricated using artificial intelligence tools.
As reactions continue online, Presidential aide on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, condemned the spread of the recording and demanded that VDM be held accountable.
“This VDM needs to face the weight of the law for being the conveyor and disseminator of a fake audio of President Tinubu. This is a clear case of an egregious abuse of the social media platform,” Onanuga said.
The Presidency maintains that the audio is not authentic and warned that the circulation of such material poses a serious risk of misinformation, especially in the age of increasingly realistic AI-generated content.
The development has further intensified discussions around digital manipulation, online accountability, and the legal implications of sharing unverified synthetic media in Nigeria.
